Three Girls Fall Into Farm Well, Drown

CHENNAI: Three 11-year-old girls died after they slipped and fell into a farm well at SP Kandigai Colony near Tiruttani, about 85 kms from the city on Sunday. The girls, Roja, Sreemathi, and Amsaveni, were all class 6 students and neighbours.

On Sunday, the girls along with four other friends went to the well near their houses to wash clothes when the mishap happened, police sources said. Around 1 pm, the group was washing clothes and playing when the three sitting on the well’s edge slipped and fell in.

“The girls’ houses were less than a kilometer away. The children who accompanying them panicked and ran towards the village to  get elders,” police said.

Locals began their search and rescue operations, but the girls were nowhere to be seen. “The well had more than 10 feet water. The supporting stones inside the well used as steps had eroded in the rains and that the girls  not knowing to swim well proved fatal,” police added.

After a two-hour hunt, the drowned girls were fished out around 3 pm by the locals, police said. RK Pet police took the three bodies to the Tiruttani Government

Hospital for autopsy. A case has been registered and further probe is on.
