CHENNAI: The PG and Research Department, Department of Biochemistry, DG Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, hosed an inter-college cultural event, ‘Cellutions’ at the college campus yesterday. The chief guest for the inaugural ceremony was Dr P Samudram, senior consultant and head, department of biochemistry, SIMS Hospital, Vadapalani. The guest of honour for the event was Dr K Lakshmanan, senior ENT surgeon and otolaryngologist.


Addressing the students during the inauguration, Samudram enlightened the students on the applications of the subject in various fields. “The term biochemistry was coined in 1903, but as a serious field of study it has grown only since 1970,” he said. “Since it is the study of chemical components and the body is made up of the same, when you study the field, you are in effect studying yourself. Besides, it has many applications in fields such as medicine, agriculture, veterinary science, nutrition and such.”


Samudram elaborated on a few choice applications, including how biochemistry was useful in drug testing and for arresting the growth of diseases in plants. The guest of honour, K Lakshmanan was all praise for the school and pointed out the stellar reputation it had among other colleges in the city. M Venkatramanan, principal, P T Srinivasan, head of department, and P Haridas, secretary of the college were present for the inaugural function.


The cultural event saw participation from 25 colleges across the city for several events such as adzap, bio-puzzle, treasure hunt, mime and potpourri. Celebrities RJ Shyam and RJ Syed of Fever FM 91.9 and Mime Sadhu and Kutty Gopi of Aadhitiya TV present as judges for certain events.
