Three cops arrested for robbing passenger in Chennai central station

Three police constables who allegedly assaulted and robbed a passenger at the Chennai central railway station have been arrested.

CHENNAI: Three police constables who allegedly assaulted and robbed a passenger at the Chennai central railway station have been arrested. 

The passenger Biswanathan, 23 and a native of Odisha, was sleeping in the waiting hall of the railway station during the wee hours of Monday (around 3 am) when three policemen on duty allegedly woke him up. Biswanathan in his complaint said the trio threatened and assaulted him and took away Rs 1500 and a wrist watch worth Rs 1000 from him. 

He subsequently lodged a complaint with the railway police. 

"The cops involved in the crime had left after their duty hours. We apprehended them later and after the complainant identified them, we arrested them, " said a senior railway police officer. 

The arrested persons are identified as J Iruthayaraj, 24, J Aruldoss, 28, and S Ramakrishna, 26. The officer said all three constables are from the Tamil Nadu Special Police wing and were posted in the city's main railway station the past last one and a half months. 

All three of the constables have been booked under IPC 392, 342, 341 (Punishment for robbery, Punishment for wrongful restraint, Punishment for wrongful confinement) and remanded in judicial custody in Puzhal central prison.
