Security guard injured in Chennai as rifle misfires in cash van

CHENNAI: A 62-year -old security guard was injured when he tried to load his rifle in a moving vehicle which was carrying cash to ATMs near Eldam’s Road in Teynampet this morning.

According to sources, Duraiswami, working at Brinks Arya, a private security agency, was loading his rifle sitting in the van which was en route to deliver cash to ATMs when he accidentally fired it and injured his hand.

The driver and another employee who were at the spot rushed the security guard to the hospital. He is now undergoing treatment.

Police sources said the victim is a retired hawaldar.

A similar incident was reported in the same company, Brinks Arya’s, office premises two years ago, where a security guarded fired his rifle while trying to load it.

A case has been registered with the Teynampet police station and further investigations are on.

A senior police officer confirmed that the rifle belonged to the injured guard, and that he had obtained a licence to possess the weapon in Katpadi, Vellore district.
