OTA cadet collapses during boxing bout, dies

A young cadet at the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA) here collapsed during a boxing match on Saturday and died of internal bleeding in the head after two days of hospitalisation.

CHENNAI: A young cadet at the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA) here collapsed during a boxing match on Saturday and died of internal bleeding in the head after two days of hospitalisation.

Rony Scaria, who hails from Kanjar in Kerala’s Idukki district, had won the first two rounds of the match with a colleague, but suddenly collapsed during the third round.

“He won the first two rounds, but in the third round suffered internal bleeding despite wearing headgear. All the safety measures were in place,” said an official source in the academy. Scaria was taken to a private multispecialty hospital at Porur and underwent emergency surgery on Saturday evening, according to a statement from the academy. However, he could not gain consciousness and breathed his last at 4.45 pm on Monday.

A statement from the academy said, “Protective gear of international standards and as mandated by sports authorities are donned by all cadets during practice and competitions.” An official added that this is the first time a cadet has died of injuries suffered during training at the academy.

Was to be commissioned in March next year

Rony Scaria (25) was slated to become a commissioned officer in the Army in March. He joined the academy in April last. His father MM Scaria is a manager in a State Bank of India’s branch in Idukki. Relatives reached the city and were in the private hospital where Rony Scaria was undergoing treatment. The post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday at the Military Hospital in Nandambakkam.
