Three travellers slip to death from Chennai suburban train near St. Thomas Mount station

CHENNAI: Three men travelling on the footboard of a suburban train in Chennai were killed when they allegedly slipped from the running train near the St Thomas Mount station on Thursday.

The train from Chengalpattu was nearing the St Thoman Mount station around 9 am when seven travellers clinging to the train fell off. Two of the men died of severe injuries on the spot and another passed away on the way to the hospital. 

The others are in hospital with severe injuries.

Police identified the two men who died on the spot as Praveen Raj, 19, and Manikandan, 22, both residents of Perungalathur.

Local sources said the train was packed during rush hour and many passengers were travelling on the footboard.

The train was halted after the accident and the injured men were rushed to the Chrompet Government Hospital in ambulances.

Suburban train services on the Beach-Tambaram section were affected for a few minutes due to the accident.
