Hi Shradha,

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your dog. It seems like he is just a playful and friendly dog, who cannot resist the urge to run out and play with his playmate. All that he is showing is mere excitement and eagerness to play. No matter how much we try, we humans can never substitute another dog in the strong physical form of play that they engage in.

However, I also understand the concern when seen from your point of view. One cannot totally dismiss the possibility that he may tend to approach another unfriendly dog and get hurt in the process.
To ensure medical fitness, vaccinate your dog regularly for all mandatory ones. There are additional vaccines that your vet would recommend based on need. Spot-treatment for fleas and ticks, deworming your dog within the recommended timeframes and nutritious food intake ensures that internally he is strong enough to handle any of the harmful bacteria and viruses that can be transmitted during play.  If possible you can also get his friend medically evaluated and vaccinated. Seek the help of co-animal lovers to assist you with this.

In addition, train your dog in the recall so that he returns to you as soon as he is called without delay. This will ensure that you remain in control of the situation and avoid any potential dangers. A professional trainer can help you in reinforcing the recall. Training your dog basic obedience can help with this as well. If you don’t want your dog wandering out, invest in a good gate that will keep him inside. Remember, when playing with his friend, he is well exercised physically and mentally. If you choose to curb this, then you have to make sure you compensate with adequate play and exercise. If your dog’s playmate is just that one stray dog, you could probably passively adopt him and ensure that he is safe to play with or even consider getting a second dog in your household.

As always, rule out any medical conditions like his sexual drive or any strays in heat.
