CHENNAI:For an educational institution to reach the top rank at an international level, community leadership should be practised, students should be loyal, institutions should produce honest grassroot public servants and students should contribute to the society, said Kiran Bedi, Lt. Governor of Puducherry, at the university day and annual sports day celebration of Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai recently.

The former IPS officer highlighted some measurables to be followed by the universities to be able to make their mark at the international level. She questioned that if there was ever a movement by men saying they will not tolerate crime against women! “To become a great university, we should begin this movement from here itself. The university should create community leadership. The whole male race is looked upon as a perpetrator. If you start this movement in this university, then it will be at the international level. But it has to be continuous,” she said.

Adding that university should also have innovative entrepreneurs and students should have their own patents, she said, “They should know the Government scheme to open a start-up and the students should also be interested in internship.” Speaking of patriotism she felt that students should realise their role as an Indian. After demonetisation India seems to be promising.
On this note, she added that students should be the givers to society. “You should contribute to society,” she said. She concluded by stating “Education doesn’t teach only to add valuables, but adding values to
the valuables.”
