CHENNAI: Twenty one days after the Lucknow police arrested Dr Sudheer, a senior professor of Madras Medical College in a cheating case, a court in the UP capital granted him bail on Thursday, said a family member.

Speaking to Express, Dr Sudheer’s son Tejesh Sudheer said his father would be returning to Chennai after completing the formalities. Meanwhile, hundreds of students from MMC continued their protest for the fifth day claiming that the case was foisted to force him pay more money to a money lender here.

On February 24, Dr Sudheer was arrested from his residence by the UP police in a cheating case filed against him in Lucknow. “He had borrowed `20 lakh from one M Kamaraj alias Kanthuvatti Kamaraj in 2011. However,  Sudheer ended up paying more than the interest and the actual amount. When he refused to pay more money, he was harassed by Kamaraj, who had instigated his accomplices Sarfaraz Ahamed and Piyush Mishra in UP to file a false cheating case in Aliganj against the professor,” said a family member of Sudheer.

The government doctors and students were staging protests by boycotting work, seeking intervention of the State government to act against these criminal networks.
