CHENNAI: Campaign for the April 12 RK Nagar bypoll appears to be picking up momentum with candidates and their leaders criss-crossing the constituency to woo voters. The seat became vacant following the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar and Minister for Khadi and Village Industries Board G Baskaran led the campaign for AIADMK-Amma candidate T T V Dhinakaran in several parts of the Assembly segment, including VOC Nagar on Sunday.
They sought votes for their candidate by explaining the achievements of AIADMK government and the visionary schemes of Jayalalithaa.
E Madhusudanan, who is seeking a mandate on behalf of AIADMK-Puratchi Thalaivi Amma, walked several streets and habitations seeking votes.
The head of AIADMK-Puratchi Thalavi Amma and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam performed pujas at Kodandaramar Street in RK Nagar where the party’s election office is to come up.
Later, talking to reporters, he sought a free and fair poll.
Referring to the poll symbol allotted to his party, he said the ‘two lamps’ represented the late chief ministers M G Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa.
Party sources said he cancelled his campaign schedule following the suicide of a 50-year-old cadre Kannan of Nedunchezhian Nagar.
