Senior GMC students let off with warning for ragging in Chennai

Senior students of Government Medical College, Omaburar Estate, accused of ragging first-year students were let off by the internal anti-ragging committee.

CHENNAI: Senior students of Government Medical College, Omaburar Estate, accused of ragging first-year students were let off by the internal anti-ragging committee.

The committee was unable to collect enough evidence to hold the senior students guilty, particularly in connection with complaints pertaining to juniors getting beaten up. Express on Saturday reported that an internal inquiry was underway at the college after first year students were allegedly beaten up by seniors when they resisted ragging.

In a complaint filed on Thursday (May 4), one of the students had said senior girls forced her counterparts to speak to boys on their Facebook list over phone and those who resisted were paraded with shoes over their heads. The University Grants Commission, apex body for regulating higher education in the country, had  directed the college to submit a report within 24 hours.

The anti-ragging committee of the college conducted an enquiry with all the concerned students and concluded that there was nothing serious and allegations were minimal.

Dr Jayanthi, vice principal of the college, who headed the enquiry said, “We have warned the seniors not to repeat even these negligible acts in future and we will be observing the activities of these students in the coming months.”

Asked about allegations of students getting beaten up and girls being forced to speak over phone, she said, “I don’t know. We have submitted the final report based on a detailed query on individual basis on Saturday.”
