CHENNAI: Fishermen from Chennai and neighbouring districts on Sunday demanded that the fisheries department promptly provide compensation for loss of business owing to intense rain.

Fast winds, rough waters and rain have kept fishermen on shore. “Neither the fishermen nor the fishmongers have any business since rain started,” said R Bharathi, from Mylai-Nochikuppam Meenava Grama Sabha, on Sunday.

The fishermen said the government had not paid them the promised relief funds for both oil spill and ‘Vardah’. The southern bench of National Green Tribunal on November 8 ordered the TN fisheries department to submit within a fortnight its reply on paying compensation to a section of fishermen affected by oil leak from a tanker ship off the Ennore port in January this year.

“The government should provide relief promptly so that it would be useful to us,” said Rupeshkumar. Officials from fisheries department Express reached out to, however, refused to comment on the issues.
