CHENNAI: Renuka, the mother of the Chennai girl S Induja who was set afire by a stalker recently, also died yesterday of the severe burns she suffered when trying to save her daughter from the flames.

The horrific incident took place on November 13 when M Akash, who was reportedly pestering Induja to marry him, entered her house and set her on fire after dousing her with petrol.  Induja was charred to death in her house at Adambakkam and her mother Renuka and sister Nivedhika suffered severe burn injuries when they tried to save Induja.

The locals managed to rescue Renuka and Nivedhika and took them to hospital. Police sources said on Tuesday evening that Renuka died in the private hospital where she was undergoing treatment. Nivedhika is still in the hospital.

The 21-year-old Renuka had completed her BE and had just joined an IT company. The accused Akash was Induja's schoolmate but had dropped out. He was said to be pestering her to marry him. Police said he came to the house with a can of petrol after learning that the family was making arrangements for her marriage.

Akash was arrested the next day by police and further investigations are on.
