Cops shunted for assaulting man, fracturing arm
CHENNAI: A day after two police personnel allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old man suspecting him to be a chain snatcher near Teynampet, both of them were transferred on Thursday. The police personnel – Murali, head constable and Mari, constable of the special team of Assistant commissioner at Teynampet, had mistaken Guna, to be a chain snatcher.
“The police were apparently looking out for a man clad in a red T-shirt. When I was passing by, they suspected it was me and starting hitting me with a lathi,” said K Guna (22), whose hand was fractured. Guna, of Giriappa Road, delivers water at houses in the same locality.
Speaking to Express, he said, “On Wednesday around 9.30 pm, my mother had asked for dinner and I was on my way home. When I reached M K Radha Nagar two police personnel in plainclothes intercepted me and hit me with lathi.” “Shocked, I begged them to leave me, but they accused me of snatching a chain and kept hitting me for more than 10 minutes in public view. Though, there were men nearby, nobody came to my rescue,” he said.
The incident happened a few metres away from his work place and hence Guna walked back and informed his owner who rushed him to government hospital where the doctor confirmed he suffered a fracture on his left hand.
“My brother has no criminal cases against him. He would go for work around 7 am and return only at 9 pm. Sometimes, he would even stay back at the shop,” said Dayalan, the victim’s brother who was waiting at the hospital.
Guna’s family filed a police complaint and after a departmental inquiry, the two personnel were transferred. Mari has been transferred to Ashok Nagar and Murali to Kodambakkam police station.
“There have been complaints against the two personnel earlier of being unfriendly,” said a police officer.
