CHENNAI: The Rotary Club of Madras Cosmos launched a Transgender Awareness Film recently. The film called Stand By Me is directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi and inaugurated by district governor Natarajan Nagoji.

A one-minute teaser was screened and it portrayed the struggle of a transgender as kids growing up and suffering through an identity crisis with no one to support them, not even their parents.

One of the many transgenders who was part of the film said, “We are happy about this. I think thirunambogal (boys who change into girls) are not recognised enough and in films, scenes where they are ill-treated left unnoticed by the censor board.

We are hoping for a change with Stand by Me.” A music concert was held in their honour by double violin Radhakrishnan, NSK Ramya and M K Balaji. President of Rotary Club gave the welcome address calling on the chief guests director Mysskin, Raghava Lawrence, Santhosh Narayanan and lyricist Vivek.

Talking about the importance of awareness Mysskin said, “I feel terrible when they are neglected by society even in this 21st century. If we can hold protests for Jallikattu, why not for our transgender community?” The event ended with an award distribution.
