Reformed rowdy hacked to death in Chennai

A 34-year-old reformed history-sheeter was hacked to death by a five-member gang on Kamarajar Salai on Monday, owing to previous enmity. All the five were later arrested.

CHENNAI : A 34-year-old reformed history-sheeter was hacked to death by a five-member gang on Kamarajar Salai on Monday, owing to previous enmity. All the five were later arrested.Police said Gopi alias ‘Mutta’ Gopi had come in his autorickshaw to a tea shop on Kamarajar Salai.

“He was reading a newspaper when two men known to him approached him and started a conversation. In minutes, they attacked him with sickles, killing him on the spot,” said an investigation officer. The men then soon escaped on motorcycles.

Passersby informed the Kodungaiyur Police, who reached the spot and conducted inquiries.Preliminary investigations revealed that Gopi had two murder cases and seven attempt to murder cases registered against him in Maduravoyal and Kodungaiyur police stations. Police suspect Gopi had developed some enmity with the gang while in jail. 

Police took CCTV footages from the locality and found out that Jeba alias Jebastain (32), ‘Ottai’ Mani (30), Siva (31), Karka alias Karthick (35) and Krishna (29) had hacked Gopi. They were later arrested.

On January 8, Gopi had filed a petition with the city police commissioner saying he wished to lead a reformed life.A similar incident took place three days ago, in which a 19-year-old boy was chased and attacked with sickles by a six-member gang at MKB Nagar in public view, sending shock waves in the residential area. With the help of a CCTV footage, the police then detained four persons.
