CHENNAI: Minister for Labour and Employment Nilofer Kafeel on Monday announced that two lakh youth would be imparted skill development training during the current financial year and the government would grant Rs 200 crore for this purpose.
Replying to the discussion on the demands for grants for her department in the Assembly, the minister said that according to Vision 2023, two crore youth would have to be given skill development training. So far, through 629 skill development institutes, as many as 4,79,061 youth had received training. Last year alone, 1,05,442 youth received training through the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation. For the current year, two lakh youth would get this training.
The minister also said that under the Prime Minister’s Kaushal Vikas Yojana, every year 46,960 persons were being given skill development training in key areas at a cost of Rs 206.60 crore. Besides, a high skill development scheme would be implemented at a cost of Rs 100 crore with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Further a centre of excellence at skill development training centres is being set up in collaboration with German-based firms Siemens and Designtech, at a cost of Rs 564.84 crore.
A mobile app would be created to help those who have completed training course in ITIs. With this, they would receive calls for maintenance and repair works and attend them. “This will serve as a first step for them to launch their own self-employment initiative in due course,” the minister added.
Nilofer Kafeel said that Rs 5 lakh financial assistance, being given to the construction workers who die at work site, would be extended to those who suffer injuries at the work place and die in hospital. The assistance for the final rites for members of the Tamil Nadu Workers Welfare Board would be hiked from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000, she said, adding that special sections would be opened for persons with disability in employment exchanges in 18 districts. Already, these special sections have been functioning in 13 districts, she noted.
