Chennai: Panthers on prowl before big hunt

CHENNAI: On Sunday afternoon, the grounds of Pachaiyappa’s College had a private tournament, and a practice match. Around 30-odd men clad in blue-yellow and red-black jerseys seemed like they really meant business. Siechem Madurai Panthers were gearing up for the third edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) — which commences on Wednesday — with a practice clash against iDream Karaikudi Kaalai.

“The level of competition in TNPL is high. You get only seven matches to prove your worth, and you need to be at your very best to win each,” said KB Arun Karthik, a Panthers veteran who has been the face of the franchise in the last two editions. Panthers have had no win to their name from their last 14 outings at the event.

And, Karthik feels that this time, his team has the arsenal to help change their fortunes. “We’ve got a new-look squad for this season, not to mention a good blend of youth and experience. While (X) Thalaivan (Sargunam) and (SP) Nathan will add more firepower to our batting, the likes of Rahil (Shah) will definitely bolster our bowling department,” he said.
