26-year-old chase nabs mobile robbers in Chennai

CHENNAI: In what might seem like a scene straight out of an action movie, a city youth chased and nabbed robbers, who dragged a woman for about 20 feet on Anna Salai while she resisted them from snatching away her mobile phone on Monday.

Preethi, a resident of Saidapet works in a private company at Adyar. “On Monday at around 8.30 pm she got off the bus and was walking towards her house. As she was crossing the Metro station, two men on a bike tried to snatch her mobile phone. Preethi, who was holding on to her phone fell down and the men dragged her for a short distance. Another man who was on his motorbike crossing on the same stretch witnessed the incident and raised caution,” said a police source.

T Vigneshwaran, 26, a resident of Little Mount, who saw the incident, rushed to help the victim. “When the robbers saw me approaching, they sped away. I immediately chased them on my bike as they rode through small lanes. They somehow managed to reach the T Nagar bus depot when their bike skid and the duo fell down. One of the robbers ran into the bus stop. I nabbed the other and handed him to the Mambalam police station. Another man who was waiting at the bus stop witnessed the incident and nabbed the other robber,” said Vigneshwaran.

“Because it was dark, not many people noticed the girl being robbed,” he added. The woman who lost two teeth was taken to the hospital for treatment and was later discharged. The Mambalam police identified the two men as Naveen and Nirmal who were habitual offenders. They were later handed over to the Saidapet police station where Preethi had registered a complaint. Police said the duo were in their 20s and were residents of Alandur. They had cases registered in Guindy and  St Thomas Mount police stations.
