Wanted criminal arrested following gun-battle in Delhi

A 26-year-old man, who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his arrest, was nabbed by the police following a gun-battle at southeast Delhi's New Friends Colony in the wee hours today.

Chand Mohammad was allegedly involved in 14 cases of robbery, theft etc., the police said, adding that a pistol and four live cartridges were seized from his possession.

The police received a tip-off that the accused was coming to Zakir Nagar to meet his friends. Accordingly, a picket was put up near the Khizrabad 'T' point to keep a watch on twowheelers, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Romil Baaniya.

At about 1.30 am, a motorcycle coming from Zakir Nagar took an abrupt U-turn and the rider lost control of it, he added.

Mohammad was riding the bike and one of his accomplices, Zahid, was sitting pillion. The two fell off the motorcycle and started running towards Zakir Nagar.

Mohammad allegedly fired three rounds from his pistol at the police team, which fired two rounds in retaliation. While Mohammad was arrested, Zahid managed to flee, the police said.

The accused was wanted in a robbery case at Jamia Nagar.

In February, while committing the crime, he had allegedly opened fire at a security guard, the police said.
