Tremors of magnitude 5.5 hit Rudraprayag; tremors felt in New Delhi, UP, Himachal Pradesh

A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.0 was felt in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. 

According to PTI, tremors were felt in several parts of North India as a medium-intensity earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district today, the India Meteorological Department said.

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi. Tremors were also felt in different parts of the country, including Haryana, UP and Himachal Pradesh.

According to the IMD's National Seismological Centre, the quake occurred at 8:49 pm.

There were no reports of loss of property or life.

Uttarakhand, a part of the Himalayan region, falls under a high seismic zone. 

According to European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the epicentre of the quake is given as 92 km north-east of Rishikesh.

Delhiites are still trying to confirm the fact a strong tremor was felt in the city. Twitter is abuzz with reactions from many people in the national capital.
