NEW DELHI: The price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Delhi hiked by Rs 2 per kilogram by gas distribution agency Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) with effect from Saturday.

With this revision, the CNG will cost Rs 75.61 per kg. This is the second hike within May and the 13th hike since March this year. Subsequently, rates have also been hiked in NCR towns of Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad.

The prices of CNG have been rising periodically since October last year, when domestic as well as international gas prices started to climb up. Between March 7 and May 21 this year, CNG price has risen by Rs 19.60 per kg.

However, the rates of PNG (piped natural gas) remain unchanged at Rs 45.86 per scm.
IGL MD Sanjay Kumar said the prices are likely to remain elevated in the near future due to high international prices of natural gas.

Last year, the period between October and December saw the cost of CNG rise by Rs 8.74 per kg, and from January this year, there was a steady rise of about 50 paise a kg almost every week.

According to gas distributors, rates have gone up after the government more than doubled the price of natural gas produced locally to USD 6.1 per million British thermal unit from April 1. For Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, the CNG price has been hiked to Rs 78.17 per kg, while for Gurugram, it will now cost Rs 83.94 per kg.
