Love is difficult. But then again, what’s more beautiful? We discovered a sombre little number for you that amplifies this emotion precisely. ‘Tu Wapas Ajaana’ by Nikita Bharani is a tale about the longing that past lovers feel for each other. With its graceful score bearing soul-stirring string rhythms by Shomu Seal, this song felt like one we had to talk about. Our chat with Nikita explores the conversation around how this song approaches love, how her experiences in sound engineering in ad films and Bollywood projects has impacted her independent projects and more.

“‘Tu Wapas Ajaana’ is actually about the theme of emotion — it’s a hope to regain lost love,” Nikita explains, adding, “It’s dedicated to someone you’ve shared beautiful moments with, but somehow lost along the way. The song is essentially for all true lovers who yearn to reconnect.”

Having worked on projects like 12th Fail and Veerey Di Wedding, the musician is mastering the ability to blend the meaning of songs with the scores that have been provided to her. Therefore, we also asked her about the process she applied for her project. For such projects, Nikita reveals that there is often a certain medley that is in her head. Elements like the supporting instruments for the score also sometimes find a confirmed spot during the composition of the song from its inception.

“Visualising the sound and then achieving it feels incredibly fulfilling. When people listen to the track and resonate emotionally, it’s like a pat on my back. This song is quite personal to me, made for someone I want to spend my life with, which is why I took on mixing, composing, and writing — it had to be just right,” she shares.

Having worked on a couple of Bollywood projects, Nikita tells us that film-makers in the industry are, indeed, open to experimenting further with their music. “They have a distinct musical sense and often know exactly what they want. Initially, I’d wonder how certain music would fit a scene, but when we find the right sound, it’s like it was made for that moment,” she highlights.

Nikita also admits to us that her exploration of softer scores can be attributed to her “soft voice”. However, the musician is all game to explore more genres. “I’m eager to explore pop and rap for their liveliness and energy. It’s about trying something new and feeling alive in the process,” she tells us.

With a bunch of EPs lined up, Nikita promises that her songs will maintain a goal that she has begun to work towards with ‘Tu Wapas Ajaana’. “Each track aims to take listeners on a heartfelt journey, connecting with them on a deeper level,” she tells us.
