Speeding Mercedes hits and kills cyclist in southeast Delhi; driver arrested

According to the victim's family members, the car allegedly hit his cycle from behind, and it was dragged on the road for several metres. The 35-year-old victim died on the spot.

NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old man was allegedly mowed down by a speeding Mercedes in southeast Delhi, following which the police arrested the driver of the offending vehicle after he surrendered before the cops, hours after the incident.

A senior police officer said the accident occurred on Saturday around Ashram flyover in southeast Delhi. The deceased was identified as Rajesh, a gardener.

Additional DCP (Southeast) Harsh Indora said they got a PCR call at Sunlight Colony police station. The call was made by a passerby who said a man was lying in a pool of blood on the road.

The police rushed to the spot and found a body lying at a roadside. A cycle belonging to the victim was found about 150 metres ahead, police said.

A preliminary probe, the police said, revealed that the victim was probably dragged for some distance under the wheels of the luxury car. The police have registered a case under various sections and initiated a probe by analysing the CCTV footage.

The registration number of the offending vehicle was seen in the footage, after which the cops contacted the owner of the Mercedes car, which was registered in the name of a company.

The owners of the private company told the cops that they had given their vehicle to one Pradeep Gautam to sell it. While the cops were trying to trace Pradeep, he surrendered before the police on Saturday evening. He was placed under arrest.
