NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday moved the Supreme Court, contesting the recent election to the final seat of Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) standing committee.
The move comes a day after Chief Minister Atishi announced that her party would challenge the result of the election, as the process flouted legal norms.
Atishi argued that the election procedure violated the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, which mandates that only the mayor or deputy mayor is authorised to oversee such elections.
During a press conference on Saturday, Atishi said, “Only the mayor has the authority to set the date and venue for these elections, and bypassing this process is not just a breach of rules but also an attack on the democratic fabric of MCD. Yesterday, BJP held an election for the last member of the standing committee, which was illegal, unconstitutional, and undemocratic. We will challenge the matter in SC.”
She alleged that the BJP, when faced with electoral defeats, resorts to manipulating processes to secure power through “backdoor” methods.
