HYDERABAD: Police today raided an illegal unit in which tallow or oil was being prepared from animal hides and bones in a residential area at Bholakpur.

After the Bholakpur water contamination issue, the government had ordered closure of tanneries in the locality that were creating air and water pollution.

Task Force sleuths raided a premises near the Telephone Exchange at Bholakpur and found animal hides, bones and other materials out of which tallow or oil was extracted. They were boiling the animal waste for long hours during night time illegally.

Ahmed Ali was preparing the tallow since the past one year and was procuring animal hides and bones from butchers. He was supplying the oil to Mujahid, a resident of the same locality, for `50 per kilo. Mujahid, in turn, was supplying the oil to soap and candle factories across the country.

“Ahmed Ali did not have any permission to run the unit at a residential locality.

The boiling of bones was making the atmosphere noxious for the health of the locals, particularly children and elderly people,” an official release said.

Police seized tins containing tallow/oil loaded in an auto trolley and other materials used for the preparation of the tallow. Ahmed Ali is absconding.
