HYDERABAD: It is a very rare opportunity when you are able run your fingers through the rarest and oldest copies of the Holy Bible, Old and New Testaments as well thousands of books on Christianity. Christian Books In English- an exclusive exhibition, which is on at the Wesley church in Secunderabad, is a veritable treasure trove of Christian literature, some dating back to the 1850s. Thousands of books, some two centuries old to the latest publications are on display till April 14.

Offering about 50,000 books on Christianity, the ongoing exhibition is in its fourth edition, the first taking place in 2007. The exhibition began on April 5, a day that coincided with the start of 40-day fasting for Easter. Classic copies of the Bible to bedtime Christian stories to gospel posters, a variety of literature can be picked up by interested readers. Some oldest translations of the New Testament including the Bible illustration by John Kitto, published in 1874 in New York, the Bible published by American Bible Society (1849) and Life of Thomas (1853) are also on display. The Old Bible, translated in 1511 during the reign of King James for common people, other Christian texts like The Psalms, The Proverb, Ecclesiastics, The Song of Songs, The Holy Bible Dictionary, Self-Interpreting Bible with references and pictures are other books on show.  “These are antiques to be preserved and not sold. The books have been imported from the US as well as European countries. Some local publications are also available,” said MD Ahmad Ali, organiser of the exhibition. The collection has books available in the price range of `20 to `200.

“I have purchased the Giant Encyclopedia, Sermon Bible, Sprinkling for Baptism, New Testament translation of original Greek and the Chronicles,” said Sandeep, a visitor. Parents looking for books to teach their kids principles of Christianity can take their pick from Santa books, Christian dictionary, Bible for children using colours, picture books, spelling Bible, story books, posters and stickers. “It is a rare opportunity to check out and buy bedtime stories, Christmas teddies, Gospels and other books on Christianity and spirituality under one roof. It is a good way to teach children about Christian beliefs and customs,” said Suzzane Reddy, a software employee.

A number of spiritual books for guiding parents, would-be mothers, teachers, elderly people are also available besides guidance books on finance, education, administration and recipes.
