HYDERABAD: In a case of negligent blood transfusion causing AIDS, a teenaged mother on Saturday approached the State Human Rights Commission saying that the blood provided to her by the Red Cross Society, Nellore was HIV positive and though she had complained over three months ago, no action has been taken.

Nineteen-year-old Shaikh Haseena, a native of Nellore, submitted a petition to the APSHRC Saturday holding the Nellore district collector B Sridhar, who is also the chairman of the blood bank, responsible, and seeking action against the blood bank authorities.

Though the collector had earlier ordered an inquiry into the incident, no other action was taken, Haseena alleged.

“The collector B Sridhar has been refusing to detail the findings of the inquiry,” Muzeer, Haseena’s relative said.

In response, the APSHRC has directed the collector to furnish the findings by March 15 and also asked the district SP BV Ramana Kumar to register a case against the blood bank.

According to her petition, Haseena, a resident of Venkateswarapuram in Nellore Town, was told she was HIV positive after giving birth to her son in November last year.

Due to complications during the delivery, Haseena had required three units of blood, which was provided by the Red Cross Society.

“A week after delivering a baby boy, she found infections all over body.

When tests were done, it was confirmed she was HIV positive,” Muzeer said.

“Haseena’s husband Shaikh Nissar is HIV negative,” Muzeer said, adding that Nissar left Haseena to her fate when he came to know of her ailment.

However, baby Zameer is healthy.
