HYDERABAD: A 20yearold student was hospitalised with serious injuries when he attempted suicide by jumping from the third floor of his apartment at Boyaguda, allegedly as he was being harassed by the police in a theft case.

According to the police, Neeraj, a degree student at a private college, was asked to appear before the Gandhinagar police who suspected his involvement in a theft that took place in his neighbour's flat in the same apartment.

K Partha Saradhi, detective inspector, Gandhinagar, said that a few days ago, Neeraj's neighbour Kiran Kumar had filed a complaint saying his mobile and cash was stolen from his house and that he suspected Neeraj to be behind it.

Based on the information given, Gandhinagar police officials went to Neeraj's house Friday afternoon and asked him and his father to come to the station. But soon after, Neeraj jumped from the third floor of the fivestoreyed building, Saradhi said.

Police shifted Neeraj to a nearby private hospital where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is said to be serious. Police, however, denied that it was harassment that led to Neeraj's suicide bid.
