HYDERABAD: Several months after the brutal murder of Swaroopa, an attender of Saifabad Science College, the Mangalhat police on Wednesday arrested an employee of Osmania University in connection with it. The investigators recovered the mobile phone of the victim which was taken by the accused and seized the weapon used in the crime.

Swaroopa was strangled to death at her residence in Old Mallepally in Dec last year. After committing the crime, the accused made away with a gold vanki, silver anklets and a cell phone, all worth Rs 1.40 lakh, from her house.

According to Manghalhat inspector G Sridhar, the accused, C Raju alias C L Raju, is working as a watchman at OU. He is staying at an OU staff quarter on the varsity campus.

Raju and the deceased were friends and the accused used to visit latter's house at Old Mallepally.  

Swaroopa intended to perform the second marriage of Archana, her elder sister, who had taken divorce from her husband. Swaroopa requested the accused to see a match for her sister and even offered money to him for the purpose. Raju demanded Rs 5,000 from Swaroopa. On her refusal, Raju bore grudge on Swaroopa and hatched a plan to eliminate her.  

Raju talked over phone to Swaroopa, who invited him to her house for talks.  The accused went to the houseand strangulated her to death with a clutch wire. The accused also threw a rice bag on Swaroopa’s face.  Then he sold the gold, police said.
