HYDERABAD: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) on Wednesday condemned the alleged arbitrary repression by the Tamil Nadu government on agitators protesting against the commissioning of the nuclear plant at Koodankulam in Tirunelveli district. The Forum demanded that the Tamil Nadu government must lift the unannounced blockade and withdraw the huge police forces from Idinthakarai area where the plant is proposed to come up.

In a release, HRF state president S Jeevan Kumar and state general secretary VS Krishna alleged that the crackdown on agitators follows a recent volte-face by the AIADMK government which is now backing reopening of the plant. They said that the anti-nuclear power plant struggle is a just one and the Tamil Nadu government is employing certain despicable methods to suppress a legitimate and peaceful movement. The anti-nuclear power plant struggle is being waged for several months by the people of Idinthakarai and other villages where the government is trying to put the agitators into trouble.
