5 JNTU students held for assaulting a junior

Five students of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad,  were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a junior student.

The incident took place at Manjeera Hostel meant for students of electronics and communication engineering. The KPHB police registered cases and made the arrests. Two others are absconding. 

When Shashank, a second-year student, was standing on the ground floor of the hostel, a final-year student, Sudershan, allegedly spat on him from the second floor. “When Shashank shouted at Sudershan objecting his filthy act, Sudershan came out of his room and warned him of dire consequences. When  Shashank refused to be cowed down, Sudershan and his friends went to his room and brutally assaulted him,” said KBHP police sub-inspector P Anjaneyulu.

Shashank, who sustained serious injuries, went to the police station and lodged a complaint that Sudershan and others had assaulted him in his room.

Based on the complaint, police registered cases under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC read with 34. Police also arrested Sudershan and his friends Kiran, Jagadeesh, Kartheek, and Sai Kumar. Two students, Vishnu and Imran, are  absconding. The arrested students confessed that they spat on the victim deliberately.

Police said that the issue will be raised with the university management on Thursday and  they will be request to take measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.

The injured Shashank was admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment and his condition is said to be stable.
