Stay healthy and Zumba

A fusion of Latin dances like Salsa, Meringue, Bachata, and so on, Zumba is a fun mix of dance and a great way to stay fit. So it was no surprise that the dance form was used to raise awareness and funds towards the cause of breast cancer.

Calling their event ‘Party in Pink’, the dance session was organised on Sunday by the Hyderabad Zumba (r) Instructor Network (ZIN (tm)), a network of Licensed Zumba Fitness Instructors, as a part of the Breast Cancer Awareness month. The event saw a turnout of atleast 70 people, all dressed in pink and grooving to the Zumba tunes.

What made Party in Pink that much more special was the co-ordinated event that happened at exactly the same time in seven other cities. Explaining, Jegatha ‘Jags’ Muralidharan, a Zumba choreographer, or also called as a Zumba jammer, said, “The event was really huge for us because it was being held across eight cities of the country at the same time. We wanted to bring the community together through dance and it took a huge effort to do that.”

The 28 year-old jammer has been an active jammer in the city for about two years now and was one of the five inructors who took to the stage on Sunday evening.

The event lasted for two hours where participants had fun following the Zumba instructors who were on stage. Dr Sajjal, a specialist on breast cancer, was also present who helped raise awareness about the disease by talking about its symptoms and how one can check for the disease by themselves.

The Hyderabad Zumba party took place at the football ground at Apollo Cancer hospital.

This was the first time such an event was conducted by the organisation and the turnout of most all age groups, has definitely left them feeling very pleased.

“Most people don’t go to a gym as they probably find it boring. But Zumba has really begun to click in India as it mixes dance along with fitness, a much more fun way to stay healthy. And Hyderabad, has shown a lot of enthusiasm for this,” points out Jags.

The ticketed event will be forwarding their proceeds to the New Zumba(r) Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention.
