GHMC worker, another man die after falling into manhole

Two persons, including a contract worker of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, died when they fell into a 15-footdeep manhole near Hitex at Madhapur on Saturday.

According to police, the contract worker, who was removing the waste material that clogged the passage inside, slipped and fell in. Another person went in to rescue the worker and both died due to suffocation. The victims were identified as Satyanarayana alias Satyam and Anjaneyulu. They hailed from Mahbubnagar and came to the city one-and-a-half-years ago in search of livelihood.

Around 1.30 pm on Saturday, Satyam was asked by his contractor to clear the manhole near the Hitex. Satyam, along with his daughter, went to the manhole and entered it to clear the waste material accumulated inside. While doing the work, he slipped and fell into the depth. His daughter raised an alarm and Anjaneyulu, who was close by, got into the manhole to save Satyam, but he too fell inside,” said Madhapur sub-inspector G Rajasekhar. “The duo died on the spot within minutes. Police alerted fire service staff who rushed to the spot and removed the bodies. The bodies were shifted to Osmania General hospital for postmortem examination,” police said.
