HYDERABAD: Seventeen years of experience in textile manufacturing gave Kolkota-based Adarsh Makhija a strong foundation to launch his brand, Osaa. His large, well-qualified in-house team sources, embroiders, cuts and finishes his range of Indian wear with a contemporary feel.

“My textile background draws me to vintage motifs and artwork, which I convert into modern designs,” says Makhija who sources his fabrics from looms located across the country and world. The result is a range of saris, lehengas, cholis, kurtas and anarkalis that are vintage in their textiles and embroidery, but contemporary in their fall, silhouette and cut. Remarkable especially in the peplum cuts appearing on kurtas and fitted Western jackets turning into elegant cholis.
Fabric play
Mixing textiles and matching indigenous techniques is another of Osaa’s signature. “I use patchwork or convert multi-colour lace into embroidery, depending on the look I’m going for,” Makhija tells us describing that his process begins with artworks and sketches. “I draw designs and motifs based on my inspirations and then bring in fabric and embroidery to suit the concept,” he adds.
Fabrics are rich and luxurious, with chiffon, georgette, satin and net taking main-stage, while Kanjeevaram silk patches or tissue brasso - an organza-based fabric that is brushed with gold, are brought in for specific collections.
And embroidery stays classic and sophisticated minus loud stone-work or glaring prints. “Most motifs are small and the embroidery is usually done through thread-work because I feel our garments carry a sense of timelessness about them,” he shares. This is evident in his layered, asymmetrical suits and drapes with embroidered jackets.
On the racks
The current collection is summery and light with fresh, pastel colours, breathy fabrics like chiffon and voille, and minimal embroidery. The upcoming range, geared for the festive fall, has a lot more embroidery on heavier fabrics and brighter and deeper colours like crimson, burnt orange, poppy green, bright blue, tomato red and electric mustard.
