Flash Mobs: Do They Serve a Purpose?

Flash Mobs: Do They Serve a Purpose?

HYDERABAD: Flash Mobs, which have been around for quite sometime now beg the question as to whether they are really serving their purpose or are just another attention grabbing technique

You are window shopping at the mall and suddenly there is a blast of music and you see someone dancing who is joined at random by another person, this chain continues till there is a sizable group dancing in the mall all of a sudden. This is Flash Mob for you.

A seemingly pointless activity where a group of people gather together and dance for a brief period.

Once the Flash Mob came to India, very soon, you could see videos of MNC employees dancing at their campus in various locations, enthusiastic college students and a mix of old and young people dancing to the tunes of old and new songs at Victoria Station in Mumbai much to the delight of the onlookers.

But like any new trend, the question does arise on how useful or what the purpose of these Flash Mobs are.

But what is clear is that they manage in getting what they want– attention.

During my college days, people were just getting to know what Flash Mob actually is. But now even a school going kid knows what a Flash Mob is. These days, Flash Mobs have become a style for all the students. Flash mob with a cause is at least better than the meaningless dances they do to just get attention. According to me, Flash Mobs are just a waste of time.

Flash mob is actually a source which is used to spread awareness about any important thing which people should know about. Since Flash Mob is something related to a group or bunch of people singing and dancing to let people know about some cause, people will be interested to watch it

Organising a flash mob event gives you an immense pleasure, especially when you are part of it. It is a very exciting feeling that you’ll be dancing suddenly when the music is played amongst thousands of people. Arranging a flash mob is like arranging a surprise birthday party at one’s place. It has to be handled so confidentially that no one should get a clue to what is happening. Wearing identical clothes can remove the suspense but I say even if the organisers are wearing it, no one would care unless they are all crowded at one place. There is no scope for a sound check because once the suspense element is lost, then the party is spoiled. Though it doesn’t seem like an issue it has a greater impact. When we perform in a flash mob, we as a group expect the people to join the flash mob out of nowhere and exit as if nothing has happened in the past few minutes.

Sampada Nadagouda,

a performer in Flash Mob events.

Flash Mobs are done mostly to spread awareness about certain issues or events. For me, it’s all about making the crowd aware that a change is required to develop few things in our society and also inspiring  them to take part in such events more and more. It’s not just about dancing for the top numbers but it’s about dancing for a cause.

Kiran,

a student who works part-time in an NGO

According to me, Flash Mobs have become very common and people have also gotten used to them. What I see is that people are just tapping their feet on the typical Bollywood numbers but are failing to understand and follow the cause for why it’s being performed. I feel even a Flash-Play as in a random play would be a even more better choice for the people to get connected.
