More Demolitions on Cards as Govt Sets Out to Reclaim Lakes

HYDERABAD: The ongoing drive against unauthorised constructions is set to gather further momentum.

The Telangana government has ordered the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to submit a report on unauthorised buildings that have come up on FTL, Buffer Zones of lakes (including Hussain Sagar), tanks, nalas and government lands.

The government direction is in pursuance of the decision taken by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to raze all unauthorised buildings and convert Hyderabad into a “regulated city.”

The GHMC, having received instructions, has ordered the Assistant City Planners (ACPs) of all the 18 circles to do a survey of such buildings and structures and submit a report as early as possible.

The state government is going ahead with bringing down illegal structures despite a big hue and cry over the drive.

On the fifth consecutive day on Saturday, the Corporation demolished as many as 54 structures, taking the total number of such buildings to 131 so far.

The standing committee of the GHMC, which met two days ago, asked the municipal commissioner to stop demolition of buildings. But the commissioner is going head with the drive on the ground that the standing committee’s directions are not binding on him since he has directions from the state government to the contrary.

Even after fixing of FTL and Buffer Zone boundaries for various water bodies falling under the Greater Hyderabad limits, by Irrigation and Revenue authorities of Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts, several unauthorised structures, including multi- storeyed buildings and apartment complexes have sprung up on water bodies that have gone dry, and on government lands.

“The ACPs are carrying out a survey of the number of pucca structures built in the FTL of water bodies and nalas. Then a consolidated report will be prepared and the same will be submitted to the state government at the earliest,” a GHMC official said.

After receiving the report, the govt would take action.
