University of Hyderabad Sees Stirs for, Against 'Kiss of Love'

HYDERABAD: The University of Hyderabad campus here today witnessed demonstrations for and against the 'Kiss of Love' event which a group in Kerala had planned in protest over moral policing.

A group of varsity students, comprising both boys and girls, held a demonstration on campus to express their solidarity with the organisers of the event, which was to be staged today in Kochi.

Holding up placards saying, 'UoH in solidarity against moral policing', 'Stop Moral Policing', etc., these students spoke up in support of the campaign in Kerala which, however, was prevented from taking off as police intervened to detain the organisers and sympathisers even before they could reach the venue of the symbolic protest.

"India has a diverse culture and ABVP cannot ask us to follow a particular culture," said a girl at the protest here even as another group of students led by supporters of ABVP and other right-wing organisations sought to counter the demonstration in favour of the Kochi campaign.

Police had to intervene to prevent a confrontation between the two groups, said deputy commissioner L Karthikeya.

"The protests by both sides went off peacefully," said Inspector N Vasu of Chandanagar police.
