HYDERABAD: Facebook, cricket, Bollywood are among the many subjects that Vipul Goyal likes to talk about in his comedic routine. As many of his jokes tend to veer towards social media, his audience consisting of mostly people in their 20s from NITs, IIMs finds an instant connect with the comedian who is from IIT Bombay.

While stand up comedy is showing lot of promise in the past few years, it was not so when comedian Vipul Goyal started out. “It was a risk I took when I decided to take up comedy fulltime. My parents were apprehensive as at that time there was not much to go on in the field. What goes into it, the monetary issues and so on,” says Vipul. Having worked as a retail analyst for six months, Vipul soon got “bored” of his job and decided to pursue his dream of getting in the business of making people laugh. “I auditioned for the comedy store where we were required to write five minutes worth of content. I got selected and I haven’t looked back since,” adds the 30-year old. Till date, Vipul has performed at places like Edinburgh festival, Montreal comedy show in addition to shows in various Indian cities. He also owns the company Humorously Yours along with five IItians which offers stand up comedy and entertainment shows.

Though sometimes, Vipul does improvise as when the need arises, most of his shows are scripted. “It’s scripted. I go in with a set of jokes in mind. However, I do keep the audience reaction in mind and see how they are responding.”

But audience reaction doesn’t seem to be a problem in his case. “As my shows are in Hinglish like 60 per cent in English and 40 per cent in Hindi. They feel as if I’m talking to them rather than performing a show,” observes Vipul.
