Travel Buzzwords for 2015

In the new millenium, change is rapid and every year comes with its new set of buzzwords and the travel industry is particularly sensitive to this new parlance, taking to new trends with gusto and adopting the latest social, technological and cultural phenomena that affects the way in which people travel and see the world.

The New Poshtels

These are a hybrid of the ‘hostel’ and the ‘hotel’, especially for the young and single travellers who are on a budget but still demand a stylised, glamorous hotel experience. Many hostels are upgrading their facilities and adapting modern and luxurious design with high-tech facilities like restaurants, twin en-suite rooms, free Wi-Fi and breakfast. These poshtels compete with boutique hotels.

The Staycation

You’re in need of a vacation but are pressed on time? Then this trend is the one for you. A staycation is an emerging trend which is slowly catching up. This one is for travel enthusiasts who decide to stay at a hotel in the city or close to the city in order to get a break from the hectic daily life without travelling too far and enjoying the amenities the hotel offers.

The Braggie

Selfies were the biggest trend of 2014 and emerging out of that is the ‘braggie’. A Braggie is a picture taken and uploaded to social media by a holidaymaker in an attempt to brag about the holidaymaker’s exotic surroundings. Typical ‘braggies’ include a view from the hotel window, the room’s bed and the surrounding landscape. Hotels use these braggies for their own publicity.

The Thrillication

A thrillication is travel with a dose of extreme adventure for the adrenaline junkie. This includes adventure sports with a twist. Activities like snorkelling with the sharks, kayaking with the whales or bungee jumping into an active volcano are some of the sports that make the cut.

The Techcication

The requirements of the traveller have changed from a good hotel room to a fully technologically equipped hotel room. Travellers look for hotels that offer free mobile check-ins, Wi-Fi and so on to maximize the hotel experience. Hotels have gone a step further to work on this and some even providing the latest technology to their guests.

The Millennials Hotels

Hotels around the world are adapting to the mobile, 24/7, networking generation known as Millennials. Thanks to this trend, more affordable hotels are getting style upgrades. Millennials like stylish settings but often lack the deep pockets of old school executives, thus leading to a surge of value-chic brands.
