First Liver Transplant at NIMS Performed on Kurnool Teacher

HYDERABAD: A teacher from Kurnool district,  61-year-old Y Satyamaiah has been given a new lease of life by the  doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) with a liver transplant. Incidentally, this is also the first liver transplant at NIMS.

Satyamaiah was diagnosed with Hepatitis B a year ago, when he approached doctors as his legs, hands and stomach had swollen and he began to experience unbearable pain and vomiting. Much to the dismay of his family members, his condition was said to be in an advanced stage and a liver transplant is the only thing which could save him.

“We had first approached doctors in Kurnool when our father had severe swelling and pain. Later he was referred to NIMS for advanced treatment. Initially we were shocked to know about his condition and were also apprehensive about whether we will get liver donation for transplantation,” said Y Sunil, son of Satyamaiah.

But thanks, to a brain dead donor, a suitable liver for transplanting on Satyamaiah was found through Jeevandan programme.

“Though liver transplant is a complicated surgery requiring a large number of specialists from multiple disciplines and advanced medical infrastructure, we have taken up the challenge and performed liver transplant surgery successfully on August 1. This liver transplant was much more complex as Satyamaiah was very sick for anesthesia. But there were no complications either during surgery or after and we are happy to discharge him from hospital within three weeks,” Dr N Bheerappa, Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, who led the surgery, said.

A team of doctors and supporting staff of more than 30 people took part in this surgery. NIMS doctors took the support of OGH doctors as they had already done a liver transplant earlier.

‘’Though the first liver transplant will give us confidence and will pave for taking up more such surgeries here, it was only possible due to the donation of a cadaver liver,’’ said Bheerappa.
