Scientists Should Focus on Finding Solutions for Masses: Minister

HYDERABAD: Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan today exhorted the scientific community to focus their work on rendering "good solutions" to address the basic needs and problems of the masses.

"All these researches, modern equipment, all the papers and the patents which we bring about through all these established laboratories, they are of no use until and unless we can in some way connect this research for the benefit of mankind," he said.

He was in the city to inaugurate the Medical Biotechnology complex at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) Annexe-II here.

The minister said even 68 years after independence, majority of Indians are still deprived of basic facilities.

In a strong message to the scientific community, Vardhan said science has answers and solution to everything and it is through science that one should be able to make the flagship programmes announced by the Prime Minister, successful.

"All these programmes that have been planned, they all have potential to solve the basic issues of the people of this country," he said, adding that occasions like this should be used as a platform for genuine introspection on initiatives being undertaken in the field and deliberate on the potential of what can be done.

The minister later speaking to reporters said that emphasis should be on what the people of the country want and that should be the parameter for scientists in their researches.

Talking about the Medical Biotechnology complex, he said it is going to make bigger strides in the field of biotechnology, nano-technology, DNA and study of genetic disorders.

He stressed on the need to ensure that one is able to use all this advanced techniques for the industry and budding entrepreneurs in a manner which is conducive for faster growth.

"At Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), at the Ministry of Earth Sciences and various other research institutions, we are trying to ensure that a new vision, new approach and out of box thinking develops to make the dream of Prime Minister for all his flagship programmes like 'Make in India', 'Swacch Bharat' successful", he said.
