HYDERABAD:The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s proposal to hand over 39 parks, colony parks, central medians and islands, flyovers, sewage treatment plants (STPs) and lake parks to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for maintenance hangs in balance.
The executive committee of HMDA, which had met in February and again in September this year, discussed the matter and approved the proposal to hand over the 39 greenery spots in GHMC limits to the corporation for their proper maintenance.
If the municipal corporation is not in a position to take over the responsibility, HMDA has asked GHMC for a Rs-5 crore fund for maintenance of the parks citing its poor financial condition. However, it has received no response from GHMC so far either on taking over the parks or on releasing funds for the purpose. HMDA developed some parks, road medians and greenery under flyovers in GHMC limits in the past to beautify the city. These parks, after development, were supposed to be maintained in the long run by the urban local bodies concerned. The cash-strapped HMDA is spending Rs 5 crore yearly on maintaining these spots and is, at present, not in a position to maintain them.
