GATS in Higher Education Draws Flak

HYDERABAD: The Save Education Committee (SEC) is planning to hold a massive dharna at Osmania University on November 4, to protest against Central government’s plan to include higher education in WTO’s GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) agreement.

Similar protests were planned at all education institutes across the state, SEC members said. Stating that the government’s proposal will affect students from poor financial background.

Addressing newsmen here on Wednesday, professor Chakradhar Rao, president, SEC, said, “School education has already become a commodity due to privatisation. If higher education is also included in GATS, the doors will be completely shut for the students from poor financial background.”
