Week-long Digital Traffic Count of Vehicles on ORR Soon

HGCL will soon undertake a weeklong continuous digital traffic count of vehicles on the 137-km-long stretch of Outer Ring Road.

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) will soon undertake a weeklong continuous digital traffic count of vehicles on the 137-km-long stretch of Outer Ring Road.

The video shooting will be done using video-based automatic traffic counter-cum-classifier system with automatic number plate recognition of each vehicle covering traffic from all lanes at 84 toll gates located at 19 interchanges between Ghatkesar and Shamirpet on the ORR.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will engage an agency to carry out the survey to estimate the potential toll to be collected on the  stretches opened to vehicular traffic. The 137-km-long Ghatkesar-Shamirpet portion of the 158-km-long ORR passes via Pedda Amberpet, Shamshabad, Narsingi, Nanakramguda, Patancheru and  Medchal. Toll is being collected on this 137-km-long portion.

The digital traffic count will be carried out by a selected agency from next month. HGCL, through HMDA, invited requests for proposal from bidders last month, and four agencies have responded.

They are Samerth Softech Solutions (Mumbai), Dhruv Consultancy Service (Pune), Vaaan Infra Ltd (Hyderabad) and AJS Ltd (Delhi).  HMDA will scrutinise the technical and financial bids  submitted by the agencies and select one of the bidders to award the work.

ORR is a closed tolling system where toll is collected from entry point to exit point of different interchanges for the exact  distance travelled by the road user, and  the tariff is rounded off to the nearest Rs 10. At present, there are 84 operational toll lanes at the 19 interchanges.

The selected bidder will provide sufficient number of cameras for each toll lane and will focus on capturing the video image of vehicular movement for classification with date and time stamp. Another camera will focus on automatic number plate recognition with date and time stamp at the same time.

The bidder will provide manpower, equipment, hardware and software, electricity power arrangements for each toll lane.

The contractor should process the data using the required software for compiling the data to analyse hourly traffic in real time with date and time stamp, for getting plaza-wise traffic count of all vehicles, classification and the corresponding number plate of all vehicles with their origin  and destination.

The agency will submit auto-generated  report on category-wise hourly vehicular traffic plaza-wise.
