TSCHE Directs Varsities to Act Tough Against Ragging

HYDERABAD: With ragging once again rearing its ugly head in several colleges across the state, the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) is all set to issue fresh directives to universities and colleges to tackle the menace.

Following the suicide of an engineering first year student of CMR Engineering College in Hyderabad and couple of other such incidents reported from the state, the TSCHE convened a meeting with the registrars of all universities in the state here on Monday to take stock of the situation.

After the deliberations, the authorities have mandated universities and their constituent colleges to constitute anti-ragging committees. The committees will have representatives from the management, senior and fresher students and a psychologist among others. The registrars have been asked to follow JNTU-Hyderabad recommendations on preventing the menace of ragging in toto.

With hostels becoming breeding ground for ragging activities, TSCHE officials have suggested universities and colleges to ensure that two teachers stay overnight in the hostels to prevent clashes between senior and junior students. Colleges were also instructed to install CCTV cameras on college and hostel premises.

Starting next week, TSCHE officials will visit all universities in the state to apprise managements of the new recommendations for preventing the same.

“TSCHE will act tough against offenders and we have conveyed to universities about the ways and means to do with it. TSCHE will visit every university to interact with students and officials to apprise them about the new set of recommendations. In another couple of days, we will finalise an action plan for the same,” TSCHE secretary Srinivas said.
