HYDERABAD: A 31-year-old youth died after falling into the nala at an under construction bridge at Centre Point on Bowenpally main road on Wednesday. Mekala Rakesh, a resident of Chinna Thokatta area in Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) limits, fell into the nala while crossing it. The nala was wide open, as SCB officials had demolished the old bridge on the nala for construction of new bridge five months ago.
Though an alternative road was laid, most pedestrians have been crossing the nala by walking on a water pipeline joining the two sides. Though residents have been complaining about delay in construction of bridge, SCB officials did not pay heed to their pleas.
“Our brother fell into nala at 11 am. There were no one at the spot to rescue him. Only after locals spotted the body and brought it out at 1 pm did officials arrive at the spot,” rued A Rajesh, brother of the deceased.
“Though we put barricades, Rakesh has crossed it. It is not advisable to cross the nala using water pipeline. The bridge work is being delayed as water board has to give nod to divert water pipelines passing through the area,” said a senior SCB engineer.
