Huge number of nominations filed disproportionate to the number of seats parties are contesting indicates the imminent trouble; several aspirants making last-ditch efforts to get blessings of party bosses
Rebel Trouble Stares Parties in the Face

HYDERABAD: The huge number of nominations filed by aspirants in the 150 divisions of Greater Hyderabad is going to be a major worry to all major political parties.

Just a look at the number of nominations filed by aspirants from each party shows how the party would be going to face the problem of rebels in the February 2 elections to the GHMC. Leaders of all the parties admit that though some might withdraw their nomination, there will certainly be rebel trouble which might mar the prospects of the official candidates.

Take TRS for example. The party is yet to announce official candidates for a few seats but 698 aspirants have already filed  nominations as TRS candidates. Though the TRS leadership will give B-form only to the official candidate, the party is apprehensive that some candidates who aspired to ticket and did not get it might still remain in the fray.

“In an election where the margin of win will be thin, each and every vote counts and the rebels might play spoilsport in such a case,” admits a TRS leader.

This problem is not unique to TRS. On behalf of the Congress, 501 candidates filed nominations while 506 TDP  ‘candidates’ filed nominations for the 87 seats the party is contesting as part of a deal with BJP.

“Already, the aspiring candidates are dejected with the poll alliance with the BJP as we have to give away 63 seats to our partner. Those who did not get the party ticket might pose a problem to us if they  do not withdraw nominations,” TDP leaders opine.

It is learnt that several aspirants have already filed their nominations in the hope that the party leadership might reconsider its decision and give them a chance to contest. Such leaders are making last-ditch efforts at their respective party offices to get the blessings of the party leadership. For the BJP too, the rebel trouble is imminent as 308 candidates filed nominations for the 63 seats it is contesting.
