New Trend: Start-up Firms Are Edging Out IT Majors as Top Recruiters

HYDERABAD: Every year campus placement grabs media attention with news about highest offers and the hunt for talent by tech giants. But a gentle breeze of change is blowing in the tech world.

Once dominated by a few IT majors, the campus placements at premier educational institutes in India are now indicating a change in trend. In a curious development,  start-up companies are edging out corporate Goliaths to emerge as top recruiters.

The ongoing placement season at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the International Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) reflects a clear picture of the changing trends in the placement arena.

With the initial phase of placement season drawing to a close at most of the premier  institutes, the statistics sourced from the IITs and IIMs show a significant growth in the number of start-ups lining up to recruit young talents.

The IIIT, Hyderabad, which attracts IT majors like Infosys, TCS, Google and Oracle, saw the registration of more than 20 start-ups for placements in this season.

TV Deviprasad, Head-Placements, IIIT Hyderabad said, “So far, more than 20 start-ups have registered for the first phase of placements. More of them are expected to attend the forthcoming phases.”

There is a similar trend in placement drives in IITs also. IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Kharagpur are some of the institutes where more number of start-ups have lined up to hire young talents.

Food search and discovery firm, the Zomato, was one of the first companies to visit the IIT Delhi and Bombay campuses this year. Another start-up, Snapdeal, which hired around 40 students from various campuses of IITs in the previous season, is planning to hire more of them this season. Housing.com was another major recruiter at the IITs.

According to Prof V Babu, training and placements officer at IIT Madras, more than 700 students at the institute got placements in this season. The institute saw more start-ups, compared to the previous season.

Around 20 start-ups queued up at IIT Kanpur in the first week of its placement season this year. Around 15 more are expected to visit soon. The Housing.com, hired around 45 students from IIT Bombay, Guwahati and Kharagpur campuses.

Giving a tough competition to the major multinational recruiters like Amazon, Google, Oracle and Infosys, the start-up companies are offering attractive salary packages in campus placements.
