2nd suicide attempt at University of Hyderabad in nine months

HYDERABAD: University of Hyderabad has rocked once again after a postgraduate attempted suicide on Thursday. This is the second suicide attempt in the university by a student in the last nine months. He was rushed to a hospital immediately and is said to be out of danger. When contacted, the student said that he is in pain and not in a position to speak and requested his identity not be revealed.As per sources, the student who had some problems related to academics, consumed 20 paracetamol tablets after which he was rushed to a private hospital in Madinaguda where his stomach was washed. The reasons behind why the student committed suicide are yet to be ascertained.

Prof Vinod Pavarala, official spokesperson of UoH, said, “The student is out of danger now. Exact reasons as to why he committed suicide will unfold in the next couple of days.”Another suicide attempt just in a span of nine months has shocked the campus community. It may be recalled that in Nov 2016, a PhD student of Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials in UoH had attempted suicide in his supervisor’s office. Since January 2016, three students of the university have committed suicide.After the suicide of Dalit PhD scholar, Rohith Vemula in January 2016. A first year Master of Fine Arts student belonging to the OBC community had committed suicide in Sep 2016. In July, a Ph.D scholar of Centre for Women’s Studies committed suicide.
